Help Healthy Grocery Shopping

Here are some tips to make your grocery trip quick and effective.  I have also included some healthy essentials that I always try to stock.

  1. The outer aisles of the grocery store are usually the safe zone. Skip the inner aisles containing the cookies, sodas, chips, and pastas. Opt for the sections with fresh ingredients. When you stick to the border you will find the more nutritious stuff like produce, seafood, meats, and dairy.  Try to always get the organic and natural versions.
  2. Read everything. Labels are sometimes misleading, but it’s a good idea to check the ingredients list. Items listed towards the beginning contain the most of that product. Don’t eat things you can’t pronounce. If you don’t know what it is–question it – research it.
  3. Make a list, double check your kitchen stock, and plan some meals out in your head or on paper. I have a magnetic pad on the fridge where I jot down ingredients when I run out. Always keep healthy ingredients on hand so there’s no excuses to get off track.
  4. Don’t go shopping hungry.
